VCOD and Our communities join together to raise funds

VCOD has joined Our Communities to raised funds for two projects that are worthwhile to assist Deaf people throughout Victoria.  The appeal is for Interpreter funds for any interpreter situation where organizations will not fund for interpreters like Specialist doctors appointment or one off meetings. http://www.ourcommunity.com.au/giving/appeal_details.do?appealId=109

This appeal is for Xmas for families of Deaf children. Hopefully with funds raised this year, families will be able to buy their children bike, or trampoline or maybe go on a holiday.

Mobile Phones and loop attachments (An email from a VCOD reader)

In my working environment, I have found that the Nokia 3310 with an Induction Loop very successful. I have found that it is clearer that the volume control phone I use at home. Prior to using the 3310, I had a Nokia 5110 with Induction Loop but due to the fragile male connection (plastic), it was not cost effective @ $115.00 as they have to replace the whole unit.
The Nokia 3310 has a stronger male connection (metal) as well as an answering button near the microphone of the loop. I feel that this product needs to be advertised more within the deaf community as I have come across a few persons like myself who were not aware of it. Some have responded with same positive results. May I suggest that you include a regular feature in your newsletters stating what products are available for hearing impaired and any positive experiences or research people may have had that may assist others.

As usual, hearing-impaired people are being slugged by Telstra again to pay for such equipment required so that we can be on par with the rest of the community. There should be concessions. Telstra make such huge profits and for such a minority of the population, we receive little support.
