HANDS UP Federation
Square came alive with colour and activity as the 'Put Your Hand Up For
The Melbourne 2005 Deaflympic Games' sign-up event launched the exciting
volunteer program to the media and publicly announced the Games'
partnership with Telstra. It
was the first time that Telstra appeared as a Major Games Partner and
about thirty Telstra Friends wearing the orange colours of Telstra acted
as representatives. They placed blue handprints on the banner to signify
the relationship between Telstra and the Melbourne 2005 Deaflympic Games
and to make a declaration of their support. After
placing their handprints on the banner, the group then mingled with the
VIP's who were present, including Games Ambassadors Sam Quinn, Andrew Gaze
and Lord Mayor of Melbourne, John So. It was an opportunity to discuss the
Games, take photos and simply enjoy the great weather that Melbourne had
turned on. The event received great media coverage and plenty of
opportunities were available for photos, interviews and stories. The
media coverage however was not the only indicator of the day's success.
One only had to look at the gigantic banner completely submerged in
handprints, or watch members of the Deaf and hearing communities
congregate together. Then there was the great number of children present
from Deaf and hearing schools around the CBD together with Government
Officials, Deaflympians and members of the corporate community. But
the biggest indicator of the day's success was the way in which the event
captured the attention of the passers by, causing them to stop and take a
closer look. If this event is any indication of things to come, the
Melbourne 2005 Deaflympic Games will undoubtedly be the biggest and best
Games ever. Michael Gonsalvez Marketing Department (Student
