Events List 2006

VCOD plays an active role in many events and activities within the Deaf community.

Some of the major events VCOD is involved with are:

Deaf Festivals
Sign of Times (guest speaker on Deaf topics)
International Week of Deaf People.

This is an annual event where Deaf people from all around the world "celebrate" their deafness. These people "show-off" their sign language, Deaf culture, Deaf arts and Deaf pride.

Deaf Indigenous Expo 6th July 2006

Deafness Expo 2006 2nd September 2006

The 2006 Deafness Expo is an exhibition and other activities addressing issues for the deaf and hearing impaired communities. It is open to the public and admission to the expo and all seminar sessions or workshops is free.

The expo will be staged for one day only, Saturday 2nd September 2006 from 10.00am until 5.00pm.

The Expo is designed to bring together information about the range of services and technology relevant to deafness. This includes things such as information about education, employment, communication, sign language, technology, recreation and more.

It is anticipated that the Expo will appeal not only to people who are hearing impaired and Deaf people, but also their families and the general community.

OCTOBER 2006

Signs of Change 12, 13th October 2006

Vicdeaf in partnership with ASLIA Victoria, will be hosting the third Mental Health and the Deaf Community Workshop as part of Mental Health Week 2006 on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th October.

Information about the Workshop including the Workshop Announcement and Call for Papers is available on the Vicdeaf website - www.vicdeaf.com.au

The Workshop will identify and examine key undertakings and initiatives around Australia in the area of deaf mental health. We welcome contributions and participation from a broad range of practitioners, consumers, client support workers, interpreters, policy makers and service managers.

This is an opportunity to share ideas and knowledge with a diverse range of people who work or have an interest in deaf mental health issues from around Australia.  The Workshop will provide a forum to promote service and program initiatives that have had a positive impact on deaf mental health and to promote future developments including the 4th International Congress on Mental Health & Deafness to be held in Brisbane in 2009.

National Week of Deaf People 14th - 20th October 2006

The National Week of Deaf People (NWDP) is a week-long national celebration of Deaf individuals and the Deaf Australian community.

It is an opportunity for the Deaf to:
• Celebrate their community, language, culture and history
• Make the public aware of their local, state and national communities
• Recognise their achievements
It is also an opportunity for organisations involved with, or wishing to be involved with the Deaf community to:
• Showcase their services and/or products
• Build / maintain relationships with Deaf people
• Be recognised for giving Deaf people a fair go in their workplace

This year's theme is "Celebrating the Deaf Australian Community"
